ToggleA WCB valve is simply a valve made from a specific type of carbon steel called “Weldable Carbon Steel, Grade B.” This steel grade meets ASTM A216 specifications and is popular because it’s weldable, cost-effective, and handles temperatures up to 800°F.
Interpreting the WCB Code
The letters in WCB tell you everything you need to know:
- W means it’s weldable. The carbon content is kept low enough for easy welding without cracking or other problems. This makes repairs and assembly much simpler.
- C stands for carbon steel. It’s the basic workhorse material that gives you good strength without costing too much.
- B is the grade level under ASTM A216. It’s a balanced option between Grade A and Grade C, offering more strength than A but staying more cost-effective than C.
What About 150 WCB Valves?
When you see a 150 WCB valve, that “150” refers to the pressure class. These valves can typically handle around 285 psi at room temperature, though that number drops as things heat up. At 500°F, you’re looking at closer to 170 psi.
The strength numbers are solid with tensile strength between 70,000 to 95,000 psi and yield strength of at least 36,000 psi. These properties provide adequate strength for most industrial ball valve applications.
Where Do Operators Use These Valves?
You’ll find WCB valves in many industries:
Oil refineries and chemical plants use them extensively because they can handle hydrocarbons at temperatures up to 800°F without the cost of stainless steel. They’re well-suited for processing units where you need reliable performance without specialty alloy costs.
Power plants use WCB valves extensively for steam systems. WCB steel handles heat and humidity well, and it’s durable enough for boiler applications.
Water treatment facilities use WCB valves because they offer improved corrosion resistance compared to standard carbon steel, especially in non-oxidizing water systems.
Different Types of WCB Valves
WCB material can be used to make most valve types. It’s commonly used in gate valves, where it provides full-bore, low-pressure-drop performance. Globe valves use it for precise flow control, and check valves benefit from its toughness to prevent backflow damage.
Ball valves are probably the most popular WCB application these days. They’re simple, reliable, and user-friendly, and their quarter-turn operation makes them easy to use. Butterfly valves made with WCB are great for large pipes where weight and cost matter.
When WCB Isn’t the Right Choice
WCB has its limits. It’s not suitable for cold applications because it becomes brittle and can crack. High temperatures over 900°F will also cause problems. For harsh chemicals or seawater, stainless steel is the better choice.
For high pressures beyond Class 600, higher-grade materials may be required.
