The main disadvantage of butterfly valves is the relatively poor sealing performance, which may lead to leakage especially under high pressure and high temperature environments. In addition, due to the structure of the valve disc, butterfly valves may generate fluid vortices when fully open, which can affect flow efficiency. For some applications, butterfly valves also have lower control accuracy.
The working principle of the butterfly valve mainly depends on its unique structural design. The core component of the butterfly valve is a disk-shaped butterfly plate, which controls the flow of fluid through the rotation of the valve stem. When the stem is rotated 90 degrees, the butterfly plate is fully open, allowing the fluid to pass freely; while in the closed state, the butterfly plate is in close contact with the valve seat, thus preventing the fluid from flowing. This simple but effective design allows the butterfly valve to open and close quickly and is suitable for a variety of fluid control applications.
In terms of flow regulation, there is a linear relationship between the opening of the butterfly valve and the flow rate. When the butterfly plate is partially open (e.g., between 15° and 70°), more sensitive flow control can be realized. This makes butterfly valves widely used in large-diameter piping systems, especially in occasions that require frequent flow adjustment. In addition, because of the wiping motion of the butterfly plate, most butterfly valves are able to handle media containing suspended solids.
Butterfly valves can be manual or automatic. Manual butterfly valves are operated by handles or handwheels and are suitable for occasions where flow adjustment is infrequent. Automatic butterfly valves, on the other hand, are equipped with electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators, which allow remote control and are suitable for systems that require frequent opening and closing.
