As the pressure inside the pipe builds up, it pushes the bonnet upward. This upward force drives the bonnet against a wedge-shaped gasket. So, the higher the pressure gets, the tighter the seal becomes. It turns the problem into the solution.

Forged Steel vs. Cast Iron

That is why you usually see forged steel on the spec sheets. Forging is when they pound the solid metal into shape with massive hammers. It packs the metal grains tight. It makes the steel incredibly dense and tough. It is the difference between a sponge and a brick.
Navigating the Supply Chain
When you go to buy these, you will see options from all over the world. You might see a China high-pressure gate valve listed alongside American or European brands. The manufacturing hub in China produces a huge volume of these forged bodies for the global market.
Honestly, the geography is not the most critical part. The paperwork is. You need to make sure the high-pressure gate valve manufacturer has done the testing. You want to see the hydrostatic test results. You want the Material Test Reports (MTRs) that prove the steel chemistry is right. If a supplier cannot give you those papers, it does not matter where the valve was made. Do not buy it.
Understanding the Class Ratings
We don’t rate these in simple PSI. We use ASME “Classes.”
- Class 900 and up: This is where high pressure starts. You see this in heavy industrial steam.
- Class 1500 to 2500: This is the danger zone. Main steam lines, high-pressure headers.
- Class 4500: This is rare stuff. Supercritical plants.
