Gate Valve Dimension Drawing Label Guide

Gate valve dimension drawings use standardized symbols and labels. Understanding these labels enables engineers to quickly interpret technical drawings, CAD files, and manufacturer datasheets.

L
Face-to-Face / End-to-End Length

Distance between flange faces or end-to-end dimension for butt-weld valves. Defined per ASME B16.10.

D
Flange Outside Diameter

Overall diameter of the flanged end. Must match the mating flange per ASME B16.5.

D1
Bolt Circle Diameter

Diameter of the circle connecting bolt hole centers on the flange face. Critical for bolt pattern alignment.

D2
Sealing Surface Diameter

Effective sealing surface diameter where the gasket makes contact. Critical to seal integrity.

H
Overall Height

Height from pipe centerline to the top of handwheel or actuator stem. Essential for space planning.

D0
Handwheel Diameter

Diameter of the manual handwheel. Larger on higher pressure classes for mechanical advantage.

Tip: When reviewing a gate valve drawing, always verify that the face-to-face length (L) matches your piping layout, and confirm the flange class matches your system pressure rating. Download dimension drawings from Xintai Valves or contact our engineering team for custom CAD files.

How to Choose the Correct Gate Valve Dimensions

Selecting a gate valve involves more than just size—you must consider pressure class, material, and actuation. Follow these steps to use this dimension guide effectively and specify the right valve for your application:

Confirm NPS / DN Size

Match the valve NPS or DN to the pipe specified in your P&ID or piping layout drawing. Oversizing increases cost and weight; undersizing causes flow restriction.

Determine Pressure Class

Reference the ASME B16.34 pressure-temperature rating chart and select the class matching your system operating conditions. Different classes have dramatically different flange sizes and weights.

Plan Installation Space

Gate valves require vertical clearance for the fully open gate, stem, handwheel or actuator. Use the H dimension to design adequate clearances around equipment and platforms.

Select Actuation Type

Small sizes can use handwheel operation; larger sizes or frequent operation require gear drive. Class 600/900 typically mandate gear actuation.

Choose Material Grade

Standard applications use A216 WCB (cast steel); low-temperature service use A352 LCC; corrosive service use Stainless Steel 304/316L.

Obtain Engineering Drawings

After finalizing selection, request complete dimension drawings, 3D CAD models, and weight data from the manufacturer for detailed design and procurement.

Gate Valve Dimensions FAQ

What is the main difference between Class 150 and Class 300?

Class 300 features significantly larger flange diameters (D), thicker walls, and heavier construction. Class 300 can operate at roughly 3× the pressure of Class 150. Review the dimension tables to see the specific size differences—they are dramatic.

Can I install a Class 300 valve in a Class 150 system?

Physically yes, but it's wasteful. While a Class 300 will install in a Class 150 system, you'll incur unnecessary cost and weight. All system components should use consistent pressure ratings for safety and economy.

Why is face-to-face length (L) critical in CAD design?

Face-to-face length determines the axial space occupied by the valve in the piping. Accurate L values are essential in 3D pipe routing and interference checking to ensure the valve clears adjacent equipment, supports, and structures.

Must Class 600 and Class 900 use gear drive?

Strongly recommended. While small Class 600 valves might theoretically use handwheel operation, the required torque becomes excessive. Class 900 must be gear-driven. Handwheel operation risks equipment damage and personnel injury—always comply with pressure equipment safety standards.

What does "/" mean in the dimension tables?

"/" indicates data not applicable or requiring special confirmation. Weight data, for example, varies by material, gate type, and special configurations. Always request manufacturer weight certificates for critical applications.

Where can I get Class 1500 / 2500 dimension data?

Xintai Valves manufactures API 600 gate valves in all classes from 150 to 2500. For Class 1500/2500 dimension tables, technical datasheets, and CAD drawings, contact our engineering team with your application details.

Need Custom Gate Valve Dimensions & Specs?
