Safety valves have a short opening time to discharge gases or liquids immediately. A safety valve opens when a certain pressure is reached; it opens partially at first to eliminate undesirable pressure from the system as rapidly as possible.

Spring Loaded Safety Valve

Most frequent questions and answers

Relief valves are automated valves used on equipment and system lines to stop over-pressurization. Most relief valves simply lift (open) at a predetermined pressure and reset (close) when the pressure drops just a little below the lifting pressure.

Normally, the valve should be set to open at the MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure) of the vessel it is meant to protect. A valve set at a MAWP of 100 PSI may open slightly above or below that pressure due to a tolerance to the actual set pressure.

Preferably, safety and safety-relief valves should be routed to a convenient place or put vertically with the drain holes left open. The whole pipe system must be supported.

Regular maintenance should be carried out. It is recommended to start initial inspections every 12 months or less. According to the service circumstances, the valve’s condition, and the required degree of performance, the operator must establish a suitable inspection interval.
